Choosing the Perfect Mirror for Your Room| Designing With Confidence
ByBrenda Bentley Pruitt
Choosing the perfect mirror for your room is as important as choosing the right accessories for an outfit. The same way you think of scale and balance for your body, think about the same principles, when choosing the right mirror for your room. See, where I am going? WINK WINK! That’s because you play a designer’s role every day when you get dressed. Let’s take a look at finding your own personal unique mirror style.
Mirrors can be used in many areas of the home. Sometimes people forget to think out of the box. This bedroom has a mirror above the night table next to the bed. The chair could be very useful for placing books or maybe a robe.
When choosing the perfect mirror for your room think about size, shape, material and style. Sometimes, a brightly colored painting doesn’t fit your taste, but a brightly colored mirror frame could add depth and color without overpowering your personal style. I know personally, I do not feel well in brightly colored clothes, but I love wearing colored bracelets, scarfs or purses, when I decorate my body! WINK WINK!
Choosing the perfect mirror for your room means taking into consideration the piece of furniture used under the mirror. A simple and thin table needs a frame that does not overpower the scale. Here the table and frame are in relationship to each other. If it were a wide frame it might seem too heavy for the table. A good rule is to hang your mirror 4 to 6 inches between the mirror and a piece of furniture.Balance is essential in interior design, as well as, decorating your body. Hanging an oversize mirror above a narrow chest could throw a room off. Think about how large dangling earrings or a large brim hat would be on a small person. The mirror chest is very complimentary to the oval mirror. The black marble top adds a nice separation between the chest and mirror. You need to think through all the parts that come into play when choosing the perfect mirror for your room. This is a cover photo from Veranda Magazine a few years back. I saved it, because I love everything about the area. The mirror just hangs there and compliments the things around it. Mirrors are great places to hang a wreath during the Christmas season.Large mirrors that lean against the wall are used more today than ever before. It’s a great way to expand the look of space, since more people are finding that down sizing to condo’s at some point in their life makes a lot of sense. Using mirrors in small spaces reflects light and makes the room feel much larger. I was in a restaurant last night seated facing a wall across from my husband, but because the owner had installed a mirror above the chair rail, I actually had a better view than he did. I could see everyone in the dining area.Try inserting a mirror in the fireplace to reflect soft, flicking light. It could be a seasonal idea, like Christmas or maybe for a party.Mirrors are not necessary in the kitchen. I have used mirrors between the top and bottom cabinets in kitchen’s where tile is usually used. It really does makes a statement when under cabinet lighting is used with the mirrors.
Mirrors are simply under-appreciated for the work they do. When you think your room can’t take another picture, but you still have blank space…bring out the mirror! WINK WINK!
